Una familia asiático-estadounidense estaba haciendo turismo en Italia, tomaron el tren para conocer más del paisaje urbano de Milán, pero lo que se encontraron fue con un grupo de universitarias locales que, sin razón alguna, comenzaron a burlarse de los viajeros, pero de lo que no se percataron es que su acto racista fue inmortalizado en un video viral dando la vuelta al mundo provocando la condena generalizada.

Mahnoor Euceph (@mahnooreu) compartió el video en TikTok que tuvo lugar el 16 de abril, donde la muchacha de origen pakistaní acompañaba a su novio chino-estadounidense junto a su madre china y padre blanco en el metro; frente a ellos están tres chicas: Margherita, Lucrezia y Elisa, quienes sin hacer ningún disimulo los miran solo para echar carcajadas que no pueden contener, a la vez que intentan hacer una burda imitación del idioma chino.
El incómodo momento se extendió por poco más de minuto y medio hasta que las italianas descienden del tren tras llegar a su destino: “estaban más tranquilas durante el video, pero aun así puedes escucharlas decir ‘ni hao’ y tener una idea de su actitud general. Nunca en mi vida había experimentado un racismo tan flagrante. Mi novio dijo lo mismo”, dice la muchacha.

I noticed these girls sitting across from us staring me down and laughing and speaking Italian. At first, I ignored it. Then I stared back at them. I asked them, “Is there a problem?” They said, “No there isn’t a problem.” At that point they started saying “Ni hao!” in an obnoxious, racist, loud voice, along with other things in Italian I couldn’t understand. They continued getting more and more aggressive, laughing at and mocking us. Eventually, I started filming them. They were the most calm during the video but you can still hear them saying ni hao and get a vibe of their general attitude. Never in my life have I experienced such blatant racism. My boyfriend said the same thing. I expected better from the younger generation. After I shared this on IG, many of my Asian friends shared their stories of experiencing racism in Italy and Europe. America may have its race issues, but Europe is 20 years behind. I hope you Italians can find these girls and shame them. It was truly disgusting behavior and I hope they learn a lesson from this. Y continuó: “esperaba algo mejor de la generación más joven. Después de compartir esto, muchos de mis amigos asiáticos compartieron sus historias de racismo en Italia y Europa. Estados Unidos puede tener sus problemas raciales, pero Europa tiene 20 años de retraso”.
El primer video alcanzó más de 19.5 millones de vistas, en tanto que el segundo, donde se expone la identidad de las muchachas, sus perfiles en Instagram y las universidades a las que asisten, supera los 7.6 millones y, como era de esperarse, la condena y el repudio por este comportamiento fue masivo.
Es importante hacer mención que Elisa Tortora estudia en la Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore; Margherita Gentile en la Universidad IULM; en tanto que Lucrezia De Vecchis en la Universidad de Milano-Bicocca. Muchos usuarios en TikTok etiquetaron a las instituciones educativas hasta que el ruido fue tal que no pudieron evitar pronunciarse al respecto.

Las “disculpas” de Margherita
Las tres universidades emitieron comunicados en los cuales coinciden en respetar como promover los valores inclusivos, condenando toda forma de racismo, pero la Universidad IULM fue un paso más allá al afirmar que educarán a sus estudiantes que incurran en estos actos. Las otras dos confirmaron abrir investigaciones, pero nada respecto a posibles sanciones.
Tras esto, Mahnoor publicó una actualización en la que reveló que Margherita Gentile se comunicó con ella vía Instagram para disculparse asegurando que jamás tuvo intención de burlarse de ella, “muchos menos de su etnia o nacionalidad”, pero la tiktoker la acusó de dar disculpas que no eran sinceras: “tú y yo sabemos que lo peor de tu comportamiento ni siquiera está en el video”.
De inmediato, su comunidad reaccionó ante la aparición de Gentile: “solo lamenta haber sido atrapada”, “eso ni siquiera es una disculpa. Están señalando cómo te siente en lugar de reconocer lo que te hicieron sentir”, “es gracioso que cada vez que es descubierta una de estas personas, de repente, todo es amor y no difundas el odio”.
