Marcus Rashford, el hombre que el Manchester United espera como futura estrella, despertó este miércoles para anotar los dos goles, uno de ellos maravilloso, que eliminaron al Chelsea en Stamford Bridge (1-2).

Los octavos de final de la Copa de la Liga fueron testigo del choque de dos entrenadores jóvenes y dos conjuntos plagados de jugadores jóvenes que ven en esta competición la opción de presentarse al mundo. Quizás por ello salieron tan nerviosos.

Los dos equipos salieron muy igualados. Probándose uno a otro, sin saber a ciencia cierta quién era el favorito y quién debía llevar la iniciativa.

El Chelsea lo intentaba algo más por la obligación de jugar en casa, mientras que el Manchester United se agazapaba, buscando aún una identidad ante los grandes que parece perdida desde hace tiempo.

La falta de ocasiones clamaba al cielo en un partido de estas características y solo dos errores encadenados de Marcos Alonso rompieron la igualdad en la primera parte.

El lateral español, presionado en la banda por dos jugadores del United, perdió la pelota, que acabó en los pies de Daniel James. El extremo inglés se adentró en el área y Alonso, con el impulso de enmendar su error, se arrojó sobre el joven, provocando un penalti.

Rashford, que este fin de semana había fallado una pena máxima, asumió la responsabilidad frente a la grada repleta de aficionados del Chelsea. El delantero no se puso nervioso, engañó a Willy Caballero e hizo el 0-1. Ahí murió la primera parte.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sonreía en la banda, mientras que Frank Lampard mantenía la calma. Sabía que la segunda parte tenía que ser suya.

Su equipo respondió. El Chelsea se volcó sobre la meta de Sergio Romero, cada vez con más peligro, pero necesitó espacio y velocidad para dar con el empate. Michy Batshuayi se marchó en carrera y sacó un magnífico disparo a la base de un poste. La remontada parecía estar en camino, porque el United no daba señales de vida en ataque.

Todo parecía destinado a que el Chelsea se llevara la victoria y entonces se produjo una falta a 30 metros de su portería. Rashford colocó la pelota como lo hizo en el penalti y, con la misma calma, firmó un disparo seco que fue directo a una escuadra. Un auténtico golazo que recordó a aquellos que Cristiano Ronaldo marcaba en Inglaterra.

Solskjaer volvía a recuperar la ventaja y Lampard ya miraba más cabizbajo al suelo. El United no necesitaba crear más peligro, apenas lo había hecho durante todo el encuentro y no lo iba a hacer con el 1-2 en el marcador. Mientras el Chelsea se desesperaba sin encontrar arriba a Tammy Abraham, el United despejaba balones, uno tras otro hasta que el colegiado pitó el final y confirmó la eliminación del que fuera finalista el año pasado.

La primera decepción en el bolsillo de Lampard y la primera alegría para Solskjaer. Una rivalidad para muchos años que empieza ganando el noruego.

Manchester United se relanzó el domingo tras ganar su primer partido en la Premier League desde mediados de septiembre, al ganar en Norwich (1-3), aún sin el lesionado Paul Pogba.

El brasileño Fred va a asumir "por un tiempo" el lugar del francés, estimó Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, estratega de los 'Red Devils'. Asociado en el medio del campo a su compatriota Andreas Pereira, "Fred va probablemente a ocupar el lugar de Paul durante un tiempo", afirmó el técnico noruego en la víspera de un duelo contra Chelsea en la Copa de la Liga de Inglaterra (EFL).

Pogba, campeón del mundo con Francia en 2018, está lesionado en un tobillo y no juega desde el 30 de septiembre. No volverá a los terrenos de juego antes de diciembre.

Fred y Andreas Pereira han contribuido a la mejoría del United, séptimo en la tabla de la Premier y primer equipo del campeonato inglés que frenó a Liverpool (1-1) en esta temporada.

Después de lograr ese empate hace algo más de una semana, United venció en Serbia al Partizán en la Europa League y el fin de semana logró su primera victoria fuera de casa en liga, en Norwich.

Chelsea viene de vencer 2-4 al Burnley a domicilio en la Premier, donde se ubica cuarto con 20 unidades, con siete puntos de ventaja sobre Manchester United y a ocho del líder Liverpool.

Los ‘Blues’, bajo la dirección de Frank Lampard, son líderes del grupo H de la Champions sobre Ajax, Valencia y Lille.
