El siempre surrealista desfile de Halloween de la Ciudad de Nueva York se realizó el martes bajo la sombra del temor real, horas después de que un hombre matara a ocho personas en una ciclovía en lo que las autoridades describieron como un acto terrorista.
El desfile en Greenwich Village se realizó bajo un fuerte dispositivo de seguridad e inició a kilómetro y medio (una milla) del lugar en el que cuatro horas antes una camioneta embistió a peatones y ciclistas que transitaban sobre un sendero cercano al World Trade Center. Pero el vistoso espectáculo se realizó con carros alegóricos, bandas musicales, nula sensibilidad y miles de espectadores.
“No voy a dejar que eso me asuste”, dijo Cathryn Stobl, una neoyorquina de 23 años de edad, mientras esperaba disfrazada de Buffy La Cazavampiros a que iniciara el desfile. “No puedes permitir que eso te impida vivir”.
La policía informó que desplegó agentes adicionales, equipos con armamento pesado y camiones de construcción como barricadas a lo largo de la ruta del desfile. Pero las autoridades hicieron énfasis en que la ciudadanía debe sentirse segura.
El gobernador demócrata Andrew Cuomo visitó la ruta al inicio del desfile, y el alcalde Bill de Blasio les aseguró a residentes y visitantes que la policía está preparada.
“Vamos a seguir trabajando en la ciudad y no nos van a detener”, dijo de Blasio.
Sin embargo, el alcalde llamó a los neoyorquinos a mantenerse alerta: “Notifiquen de inmediato a un agente si ven algo inusual, algo que los preocupe”.
El desfile, abierto a todo aquel que vaya disfrazado, inició en 1973 con un titiritero que marchaba acompañado de su familia, y posteriormente se convirtió en un evento televisado.
Fantasmas, duendes, zombies, superhéroes, hombres en zancos, un montón de abejorros humanos y un carro alegórico repleto de personas sin camisa, fueron algunos de los que transitaron por la Sexta Avenida mientras los espectadores bailaban al ritmo de tambores y música caribeña.
Pero, para Tamia Gholston, quien iba disfrazada Batichica, la multitud parecía menor a la de otros años: “Tal vez sea por el ataque terrorista”, dijo la neoyorquina.
