El número de muertos por el choque de trenes ocurrido este viernes a las afueras de la ciudad de Alejandría, Egipto, aumentó a 41, mientras que otras 132 personas siguen hospitalizadas, doce de ellas en estado grave, informó el Ministerio de Sanidad.
La mayoría de las víctimas tiene heridas leves o moderadas y pronóstico estable, pero doce están en cuidados intensivos, afirmó el portavoz del Ministerio de Sanidad y Vivienda, Jaled Muyahid, en unas declaraciones al diario oficial "Al Ahram".
Otras 47 personas que fueron atendidas en hospitales después del accidente ya recibieron el alta, añadió la fuente.
El accidente se produjo en la zona de Jorshed, cerca de la estación ferroviaria del municipio de Abis, vecino a Alejandría, cuando uno de los convoyes, procedente de El Cairo, golpeó al otro tren, que venía de Port Said (norte) y que estaba parado en la vía.
El Ministerio de Transporte anunció que ya se ha completado el trabajo de liberación de las vías, por lo que se ha restablecido el tráfico ferroviario en Alejandría, la segunda mayor ciudad del país.
Las averías, retrasos y accidentes son frecuentes en la vetusta y mal conservada red ferroviaria de Egipto, y ya está siendo investigado por la fiscalía y por el Gobierno.
El maquinista del tren procedente de El Cairo, que embistió al otro convoy, se entregó a la policía y fue trasladado a comisaría para ser sometido a un interrogatorio.

En Egipto suelen haber graves accidentes de carretera y ferroviarios debido a una circulación caótica, a unos vehículos vetustos y a unas infraestructuras en mal estado.
Se trata del accidente de tren más mortífero desde el choque, en 2012, entre un bus escolar y un tren en un paso a nivel en la provincia de Assiut (centro) que dejó 47 muertos.
En noviembre de 2013, una colisión entre un tren y un autobús en el sur de El Cairo dejó un saldo de 27 muertos. La mayoría de las víctimas venían de una boda.
Los egipcios culpan desde hace tiempo al gobierno de no haber logrado reducir los accidentes de transportes y los problemas de infraestructuras.
En 2002, un incendio ocurrido en un tren dejó 373 muertos a unos 40 kilómetros al sur de El Cairo, la tragedia ferroviaria más mortífera de la historia del país y una de las más graves acaecidas en los últimos 20 años en todo el mundo.
